Teeth Whitening Information

What do I need to Know Before Having a Teeth Whitening Treatment?

When it comes to tooth-whitening, you've got two options: in-chair teeth whitening, or a take home treatment.  So what’s the difference and what do I need to know before getting my teeth whitened?

Both teeth whitening options generally use peroxide based whitening gels however there are non-peroxide options available however the best results come from peroxide based treatments.

Many people believe, the longer you keep a stronger solution on your teeth, the whiter your teeth become. However, this is not the case.  Peroxide gel peeks after being applied for 20 minutes and there is little benefit after this.  Keeping the gel on longer will dehydrate the tooth and increase sensitivity to the teeth and gums. To increase the results it is best to remove the gel completely and repeat the application.  Using stronger peroxide or leaving gel on for long periods will not give better results it will only cause more pain and sensitivity with a risk of blisters in the mouth.

There are pros and cons to each option, but before you try homing whitening kits, talk to your dentist about the condition of your teeth and gums and ensure you have no dental work required before doing any whitening treatment. Not everyone will see good results as your teeth will only lighten to their original colour.  Some people have naturally yellower teeth than others.  There are also conditions like flourosis and tetracycline stains which will not benefit from a whitening treatment no matter who does it of what teeth whitening products are used.   Whitening will not lighten porcelain veneers, fillings or crowns.

In Chair Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening done in-chair can get maximum results in less than 1 hour. The whitening solution is activated by an accelerator lamp which can get your teeth as white as they will go by whitening in a single visit.  So what does this mean?  How white will your teeth go?  Your teeth will whiten to the colour they were originally prior to staining by diet and lifestyle.  Teeth whitening removes stains from the surface of the teeth, it doesn't whitening enamel no matter who does it.
The cost of in chair tooth whitening varies, but can range from $500 to $1,000 if performed by a dentist or a non-dental professional technician can offer the treatment from $99 - $299.

Once your teeth are whitened you will need to avoid dark coloured food and drink for 24-48 hours to avoid re-staining while teeth are porous.

At Home Teeth Whitening Products

There is a huge range of tooth bleaching choices tooth whitening strips, pens.  Each home whitening treatment will only achieve around half a shade whiter. These tooth whitening products usually need to be applied once or twice a day for 10 to 14 days. Keep in mind you must avoid staining food and beverages for at least 24 hours after each time you use this method which can be a little annoying after a while.

Tray based teeth whitening systems have a mouth guard which is filled with a peroxide-based whitening gel or paste and placed over the teeth for half an hour a day for up to four weeks. You can buy tray-based tooth whitening systems over-the-counter or have one custom-fitted by your dentist. The cost can range from $15 to $250.  Again avoid staining food for 24 hours after each application.

Tooth whitening toothpastes. Because they're mildly abrasive all toothpaste helps remove stains from teeth. Whitening toothpastes, however, also contain chemicals or polishing agents that help scrub stains from teeth. Whitening toothpastes are relatively inexpensive and brighten teeth by about one shade. Some whitening toothpastes contain peroxides, but they aren't left on the teeth long enough to have a whitening benefit.  Extended use of these products can damage tooth enamel.

What Results Can My Clients Expect From and In-Chair Treatment?

We get fantastic results from our products with results of 5 to 14 shades whiter able to be achieved on untreated teeth.  Results will be reduced if the client uses any home whitening products or has had an in-chair treatment in the past 2 years.  While most clients are thrilled with the results some have unrealistic expectations.  Teeth whitening will not produce paper white teeth like seen in the movies this is a result or having the surface of the teeth replaced with porcelain veneers.  Teeth whitening will remove stains from the surface of the teeth and return them to the colour they were originally grown. We have great live results our clients are getting on our Facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/teethwhiteninginfo
